Hommage Issue Seven represented yet another seismic shift in the attitude of the publication in relation to the realities of addressing the market. Jesse's Letter from the Editor expounds quite a bit on that change, though there was much left unsaid regarding pricing strategy. This issue was the first to feature a Special Edition.
The Special Edition was built around two silver gelatin darkroom prints; one that functions as a slipcover, and a second contact print of the centerfold image. By focusing on the print as the core object being sold, with the magazine included with a purchase, the strategy was to begin to allow the reader to understand the value of the object and, in so doing, to charge a price commiserate with what is required for the publication to be able to continue operation.
However, the gulf between the perception of the object and its value proved to be too great for many customers. More to be gleaned from this attempt.
